Yesterday, our Democracy Reading Group had the honor of sitting down with Dr Marcel Dirsus to discuss his book How Tyrants Fall: And How Nations Survive. A recording of this video interview for Paid Subscribers is included at the end of this newsletter.

TODAY. 4 June 2025. Noon eastern. I’m hosting a Substack LIVE with
Anthony Christian
.

Anthony shares all kinds of ways the Democratic Party could be better at messaging, but we could be using his ideas more in our own communities.

Paid Subscribers, please join us!

My next live event will be Tuesday, 10 June 2025 at 7pm eastern. I’m speaking about Project 2025 with David A. Graham (author of The Project and writer at The Atlantic) for Big Tent USA!

If I can provide a link for everyone, I will.

I’m also speaking with Blue Tennessee on 12 June.

Other Upcoming Events for Paid Subscribers:

Wednesday. 11 June 2025. Noon eastern.

.

Ravi Chandra MD DFAPA, a San Francisco-based psychiatrist, will join Paid Subscribers to build on our recent discussion of narcissists. This event will happen on Substack LIVE.

Access Dr Chandra’s impressive bio HERE.

Friday. 27 June 2025. Noon eastern.

Substack LIVE event with

Anat Shenker-Osorio
, the progressive voice behind the term “MAGA Murder Budget.”

Host of the Words to Win By podcast and Principal of ASO Communications, Anat Shenker-Osorio examines why certain messages falter where others deliver. She has led research for new messaging on issues ranging from freedom to join together in union to clean energy and from immigrant rights to reforming criminal justice. Anat’s original approach through priming experiments, task-based testing and online dial surveys has led to progressive electoral and policy victories across the globe. Anat delivers her findings packed in snark at venues such as the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Centre for Australian Progress, Irish Migrant Centre, Open Society Foundations, Ford Foundation and LUSH International. Her writing and research is profiled in The New York Times, The Atlantic, Boston Globe, Salon, The Guardian and Grist among others. She is the author of Don’t Buy It: The Trouble with Talking Nonsense About the Economy.

Monday. 30 June 2025. Noon eastern.

Democracy Reading Group Event with Amanda Tyler, Executive Director of the BJC (Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty) and author of our June democracy read How to End Christian Nationalism.

This event will happen on Zoom. I will send out the Zoom link around 24 hours before the event.

And finally, I’ve changed July’s Democracy Reading Group book. Originally, we were going to read The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. Her promoters were kind enough to get back to me, but I couldn’t afford her fee. (She deserves every penny.)

BUT her promoter encouraged me to reach out to the PR team at her publisher and extend an invitation to speak about her memoir set to release later this year. Authors often speak to reading groups to promote new books and have a different fee structure for those events. Fingers crossed we can get Ms Atwood to speak with us about her new memoir.

Which means we have a new July Democracy Read!

Jenn Budd
is a former US Border Patrol agent turned immigrant rights activist and active Substacker who continues to educate us about rampant corruption within CBP, ICE, and other immigration agencies. I often share her posts to amplify what’s happening.

During July, we will read her memoir Against the Wall: My Journey from Border Patrol Agent to Immigrant Rights Activist.

Given what’s happening to immigrants in the United States, this couldn’t be a more timely read.

We will discuss Budd’s book via Zoom on Wednesday, 30 July 2025, at Noon eastern. Mark your calendars!
