We Need To Talk About Email Security

Today’s newsletter may seem scattershot, but please keep reading. I’ve got information about email security. News about exciting upcoming events. And my ongoing FOREVER $48 Annual Subscription Sale.
Too many subscribers are messaging me to say they are not receiving my emails. Paid subscribers are impacted.
I’m going to release a special newsletter to address what I think is happening, but in the meantime, here are things you can do:
Check your Substack email settings.
If you’ve downloaded the Substack app, YOU MAY STOP RECEIVING EMAILS FROM PUBLICATIONS YOU’VE SUBSCRIBED TO.
Since the whole point of this place was supposed to be email delivery, it is maddening to have to send instructions to readers to continue to receive emails they signed up for. Yet, here we are.
To make sure you continue to receive emails from this (and any other) Substack publication:
Go to the Substack app.
Click on your picture. In the lower right-hand corner of the screen, you’ll see a round widget. Click that widget. It will take you to your Settings.
Click on Notifications.
Click on Newsletter Delivery.
Click Prefer email.
For good measure, I also checked the email delivery settings in my desktop app. Here’s how:
On your Substack homepage, click on your picture in the upper right hand corner of your screen. A drop-down menu will appear. Click Settings.
Scroll to Notifications. Click Newsletter delivery and check Prefer email.
If you are still using Gmail or another free United States-based email provider to subscribe to Substack newsletters, you may want to select a more secure, EU-based email provider.
In February, I wrote about Gmail and Google’s incentives to kiss the fascist ring.
More than half my subscriber list still uses Gmail for email delivery.
I have talked with multiple tech experts, and they all agree that a fascist company could “obey in advance” by limiting delivery of emails from outlets deemed to be unfriendly to the regime.
Plus, Gmail is NOT SECURE. Other free US-based email platforms have similar issues. Assume a predatory government has access to everything you send and receive on any free US-based email platform.
EU-based email providers are subject to EU privacy laws. They operate beyond the reach of a predatory US government. Many of these services are encrypted for extra security. Even for a few dollars a month, they are superior to free US-based email services.
