There’s a scene in the movie Groundhog Day where Bill Murray’s character laments about the same meaninglessness occurring over and over again and his companion relies: “ that about covers it.” I think that’s how many of them feel: hopeless and nothing that they do matters. So hurting someone else that they think is getting more, has become the point of their lives.
I have to reply to this. I can't speak for any other state than Louisiana because it is the only state I've lived in, but I know the people here well. I like to say that these are the priorities of white people here:
1. Football
2. Food
3. Hunting/fishing
4. Football (not a mistake)
5. Partying/festivals
It was very easy for the Republican Party to influence most of these people into believing that any and all of their problems are caused by minorities "grifting" off of everyone else.
Not everyone fits into this category, but I know a big majority do after watching them kick themselves in the a$$ over and over again by who they vote for every year.
Something else I've realized lately is that the older people get, the more they don't want to have to worry about what is going on in politics. They just want someone THEY trust to tell them who to vote for. They no longer want to think for themselves. I hope I never get to that point. Thank you, Andra, for all you do (and all of the crap you have to put up with).
This list is the same in South Carolina, though I'd add "Church" somewhere. I got so sick of living in a place where the Religion of Football was practically the only thing we could talk about at parties/festivals/events, usually as a peripheral to being regaled about someone's last "huntin' trip" while we ate Lowcountry food, and wondering amongst ourselves how many guns were present at the event, either concealed on other people or in their trucks.
Steady was terrible for sure. And even though I had subscribed to other publications on Steady and canceled them when our consensus was in, I still get emails from them..

On my note amplifying @Michael Zeitgeist's article, one of my newer subscribers--that I'm fairly certain has been around since my article talking about the algorithmic bending over we're getting-- recommended I spend my sparse pittance on somebody who already makes a plentiful living off this app... It was prefaced with "I gladly do this".

I read that again and do wonder why I've tried so hard, why I'm still trying, when so many Americans are like, "Nah. It won't be as bad as being inconvenienced by having to change my life and/or go without."

There ability to yell, with minimal pushback from the Republicans on the Committee (and some Republicans also putting up with “Biden blaming”), is the result of constituent’s contacting them saying “Enough of Biden!!!!”
It’s the appropriations committee - and American’s are watching how their tax money is being doled out.

I will be curious how your efforts will turn out. I still don’t fully understand how Substack works, but I know enough to realize that Andreessen’s investment was, not exactly a death knell, but certainly increased active censorship. So disappointing.
Just as I would have liked to see Bezos endow the Washington Post to set it up as a successful and fully independent nonprofit, I would like to see a suite of nonprofit/public benefit corp-owned social media that are completely immune from the individual whims of fascists. Wikipedia is a decent model.
What I'm trying to do will ultimately replace a tiny part of Voice of America and Radio Free Europe. Etc. I can't set it up alone, and I can't do it for nothing, but I'm going to try to make it happen.

I grew up Catholic. Our regular priest had season tickets for Saints games. So much for the vow of poverty!
