It was fun hearing you recount your beginnings as a writer, fun to have seen your growth over so many years, to have fascinated your first keynote address, even though I wasn’t able to be there in the end. Life is crazy and ruthless and glorious, all at once. I know I’m off on a tangent, but I’m so busy regaining my residency visa here in Ecuador, I’m not concentrating well. Have been strategizing for weeks how to get documents apostilled from a distance, when the Dept of State sets up double binds and slows the process, perhaps in an effort to discourage expatriation. At any rate, just wanted to say hi and apologize for not being here more often over the past month. I know you understand. Where did you see Sinners? Which app? Take care, my friend!

I *think* you can get what you need from Interpol but I'm not sure if they have a Quito office. Surely they do.

We watched Sinners on Apple. We bought it, since it's one of those things to watch more than once for the layering.

Andra, a great newsletter.

If, only...

We, as a collective, don't learn from the past or change behaviors to prevent making the same mistakes. Some individuals learn and change. As a society, we are a disappointment in that regard.

Sadly, much of the problems have to do with skin color.

We ignore history and the people harmed. Yet, the stain never goes away.

I’ve been wanting to write about Sinners for several days and didn’t quite know how. I don’t talk a lot about my novels or how (especially the first one) came to be, but this movie stirred up a lot of what that process is like. I put this here to work through those feelings, which is what spaces like this are sometimes for.

I think fiction and storytelling have a lot to teach us. Especially in the empathy department. That so many Americans don’t read novels contributes to our empathy void. Sinners feels like watching a novel.

I love the long single-shot dance scene. I've watched it several times to try to find all the hidden histories and bits. It's such a gorgeous thing.

My husband is part Irish, so the mingling with Irish oppression and history was also very poignant. Remick's backstory was that he'd been trapped as a vampire for more than a millennium, and he wound up there because of medieval church oppression and feudal government. His speech is as much a commentary on where we're headed as where we've been. It's very powerful.
